Alllllll the time people are talking about big plans, grand ideas, "the one that's going to blow up". Yes it's definitely fun and easy to ramble on about how we're going to grow up and obtain our first major success. Our minds are vast playgrounds where anything is possible, but once you step outside of your head, and then your home to try to implement some of those ideas - things fall apart. Maybe there were hefty setup fees that weren't anticipated, maybe your partner who was overly excited about jumping into your new project yesterday is too busy shopping today or just doesn't feel like doing it right now (my biggest pet peeve of all).
All of the above are typical ways your idea or project could get shot down. Guy Kawasaki blogger for How To Change the World has written extensively about turning your ideas into real businesses, in his post on The Art Of Innovation he points out a number of methods and guidelines that can help any start up avoid the common pitfalls most innovators (yes that means you!!) face.
My two most favorite of the points he makes in that post are:
Sometimes not having perfection can prevent your project from leaving the drawing board... truth is most people wont even see your project in those first ugly moments. Once it is out there - nothing motivates you more to fix it up to perfection then knowing it's out there and it needs to be finished now that it's out in the open. So be brave take a chance, if you leave it in the workshop you'll never know if they like it and chances are folks won't even notice the imperfections before you have a chance to fix them.
